Rigell Votes to Prohibit the Transfer of GITMO Detainees

Statement

Date: Sept. 15, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-02) today voted in favor of H.R. 5351, a bill prohibiting the transfer of any individual detained at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (GITMO). The bill passed the House of Representatives by a bipartisan vote of 244-174.
"Americans are extremely concerned about the Administration's objectives when it comes to circumventing Congress to release GITMO detainees," Rigell said. "These detainees are enemy combatants, and the likelihood that they will return to the battlefield is exceptionally high."
The Department of Defense has acknowledged that approximately 30 percent of detainees have returned to terrorism. "H.R. 5351 is straight and to the point - there's no fine print when it comes to protecting the American people," Rigell added.
On September 9, 2014 Congressman Rigell led legislation, which passed with bipartisan support, condemning and disapproving of the President's unlawful exchange of five senior Taliban leaders. The legislation repudiated the Administration's failure to comply with a federal law that Congress be notified at least 30 days before the transfer of GITMO detainees.
